Last year, around this time, news reports highlighted an 8 year old Californian girl with an incredible and truly fortunate story.  She had contracted rabies following a scratch from a stray cat and survived (albeit with intensive medical care), despite not receiving the rabies vaccine.  She was very lucky because rabies, although rare, is almost always fatal.  Since summer is here, please be aware of the following facts and prevention tips about rabies. Although the Illinois Poison Center handles calls about human-related exposures only, we know many of our readers still need poison prevention tips for their furry, four-  legged friends. Did you know there was an animal poison control center located right here in Illinois?  Well this week the ASPCA Animal Poison Control offers some great tips to keep pets safe in summer heat.

The Illinois state budget maintains level funding for the Illinois Poison Center for the upcoming year!

After sustaining funding decreases of over 30% in the past two years, it was feared that the funding for the IPC would be reduced further.  Due to previous funding cuts, the IPC has had to reduce about 25% of its staff hours and this has led to service difficulties such as extended wait times for the emergency hotline, increased number of people hanging up on our emergency line, and fewer poison prevention education events for communities.  It was greatly feared that further cuts would cost the IPC its national accreditation status as a recognized center of quality.

However, thanks to the help of our supporters throughout Illinois, the Governor and the Illinois General Assembly agreed to keep the IPC budget at level funding to the previous year.  How did our supporters help? Read more »
